The Depths Of Darkness eBook Laurie Bowler

I will have to agree with Stargazer. While, at first, I found the story engaging, and the plot interesting, the further into the book I got, the WORSE the writing was. It seemed the author's grasp of English grammar and proper word usage was waning as she wrote.

I think this author has promise, but really needs a good editor to fix up the issues and make the book readable. Like Stargazer, I got about halfway through the book and simply could not read further, as the poor writing, missing words, made up words, misused words, and such was far too distracting. I just got tired of filling in the blanks, and trying to figure out what the correct word should have been.

I don't enjoy giving bad reviews, but feel I have to be fair to other readers who may pay for a seriously disappointing book.

Again, great promise, but please, get a good editor!

The Depths Of Darkness eBook Laurie Bowler Reviews

The basic plot, which I could follow with some imagination, was interesting. But the lack of flow, most evident in the middle (which is as far as I could stand to read), really killed the effectiveness of the telling. Add the poor grammar, misspellings and puntuation errors, and it sadly became unreadable. A good editing could fix these problems.
One of the nice things about Depths of Darkness was the fact that author Laurie Bowler took her vampire tales in a new direction. The story was beautifully written and I was on the edge of my seat as I read it. Those complaining about the spelling mistakes need to understand that this is UK English in the book. A very exciting tale and I will be the first in line for the second part.
This is the sixth book I have read from this author and is the best yet. I wasn't sure this would be able to improve on the already impressive books I have read previously, but boy am I glad to be proven wrong.

This story is a bit of a departure for the author from her previous books in that the lead character, Patty, is not a vampire, but instead is a witch.

The story is read from the perspective of Patty and follows her as she tries to uncover the truth behind the death of her mentor Matace. As the story progresses she learns greater truths about herself and her purpose in the world of witches and immortals and finds herself fighting to protect the worlds of both mortals and immortals.

Again the author's descriptive powers come to the fore, imaginative and detailed descriptions that paint the scenes into your mind leaving you immersed in this wonderfully imaginative world. The character's emotions are again portrayed to a very high standard and leave you willing them to succeed. The humour in places does well to give a welcome break in the tension.

The imagination of this story stands head and shoulders above the author's previous books with a great variety of different demons, spells and parallel worlds. This is definitly this author's finest work to date and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it from start to finish.

This is a must read.
The Depth of Darkness
By Laurie Bowler
151 pages Novella

Protecting the world is a large task but someone has to do it! Patty Deville is human who works for the Realm and has been learning a little magic. Now she learns that there is more to her than meets the eye and she must give it all she has to save the world.
Patty was a foundling child who was adopted by a nice human couple. But when Patty discovers a magical tome in her backyard, she unlocks her own magical powers and reaches out to the Realm for instruction. I loved Patty’s optimistic outlook. No matter how rough her life was, she always tried to see the best. Even with learning that she was made to take out her former friend, Lilly who is hell-bent on destroying the world.
Luke Granger is a vampire who is assigned to secretly watch over Patty and protect her. But strong feelings begin to develop between them, although a relationship between a vampire and a witch is outlawed. Luke is a funny, sweet guy who takes his job very seriously. He doesn’t really understand Patty but is willing to do anything to protect her and make sure that she is happy. He even is willing to go against the rules and offers to turn her.
The Depth of Darkness is a thrilling read! The world that Laurie Bowler creates is one filled with magic and mayhem! Vampires, magic, and mythical creatures abound. The mystery surrounding Patty’s creation and final outcome kept me surprised and excited. I still want to know about all her many parts. However, my heart broke along with Patty’s own when she found all the earlier creations that didn’t last. It showed me just how much depth the Realm was willing to go to in order to save the world. I really loved the creatures named the Meniagier. They seemed like large dogs with their slimy kisses and pack mentality, except that Patty could ride them! I would love to have one for my own!!
The romance in The Depth of Darkness was sweet without being overwhelming. Luke and Patty make a strong couple and both were willing to put the needs of the other first. I was glad that Darcy was able to find someone else and quit being so nasty to Patty. Love doesn’t always follow a natural course and just because Darcy knew Luke for longer, doesn’t mean that he would love her more.
I highly recommend The Depth of Darkness to all fantasy readers who love an exciting read, filled with epic battles and unique characters. Each piece of the puzzle will keep you interested and digging for more!
I got to 4% read of this book and had to stop. While the storyline holds promise, the delivery stalled quickly. I'm wondering if this author's primary language is not English? Missing words, wrongly used words, and words of unknown origin truly made comprehension of the story a real challenge. ( I won't read further, I'm sorry.
I've had my for close to two years now, and this is the very first book I deleted without finishing. The plot seems interesting - wanting to know what happens next is the only thing that got me as far as I did. But the quality of the writing itself was so poor that I just couldn't get all the way through it.

With the help of an editor, this might be a great book - currently, it is a series of run-on or incomplete, poorly formed sentences, bad grammar, typos galore... I am not a spelling/grammar nazi and I very much respect the effort that goes into a self-published writer's work, but this book is unreadable in its current state.
I will have to agree with Stargazer. While, at first, I found the story engaging, and the plot interesting, the further into the book I got, the WORSE the writing was. It seemed the author's grasp of English grammar and proper word usage was waning as she wrote.
