I've said this in my last few dear America reviews that I read these books as a kid, and then over and over again as an adult.Which is very true.
I've read this one over and over since middle school. Anetka is living in Poland, with her grandmother and younger brother. Her father has moved to America to start a new life, and she misses him. One day he sends a letter with tickets for her and her brother to come to America. But there's a hitch. He's promised her as a bride to a coal miner named Stanley who she's never met. Anetka doesn't want to marry him but has no choice. What her father doesn't tell him is Stanley has children, one of which who immediately hates Anetka, who is still grieving over the loss of her mother. Anetka makes many mistakes, and her husband is less than loving. She struggles with trying to be a good stepmother and trying to make her husband happy while dealing with other problems. I don't want to spoil the book for you, but this book, like so far from home, is a very sad story. Highly recommended. there are few bad books in the dear America series, but this is one of my favorites.

This is my FAVORITE book! But when you finish the 189th page, don't read the Epilogue. It is EXTREMELY sad. This is the only book that I read repeatedly, I never read my other books a second time but this book is very unique. It has some romance stuff in this book, which includes kissing and marriage. For all those romance lovers and Dear America readers out there, 99.9 percent if a chance you will absolutely fall in love with this book.
Everything was good, as advertised.
This is a book I hold dear. I have read this book several times since my childhood. I absolutely love this book and will continue to read it for the rest of my life.
Impeccable research paired with fully multi-dimensional characters brought this tale to life. Wonderful background reading for anyone interested in coal mining and a great introduction to middle grade readers about this slice of American history.
